Our propolis is no coincidence. It comes from one of the cleanest and richest areas of Greece: Lake Plastiras , at the foot of Agrafa. But before we get there, let's see where its story begins.

🏺 How did the ancients know about propolis?

The word “propolis” comes from ancient Greek:
pro- (in front) + πολις (city), meaning “protector of the city.” For bees, the city is their hive — and propolis is the barrier of protection against any invader.

The ancients observed that:

• The hive, despite the humidity and heat, did not emit odors and remained sterile.

• Dead insects or animals that could not be removed were "embalmed" with propolis by the bees themselves.

• Bees coated cracks and holes with a sticky, resinous substance – propolis – to protect themselves from germs, air and moisture.

📜 Historical references:

• Hippocrates : used it to treat wounds and ulcers.

• Egyptians : included it in embalming for its powerful antiseptic properties.

• Roman doctors : recommended it for abscesses, pus and infections.

• Eastern traditions : they used it for skin problems and ulcers.

🌳 My bee 's propolis — Where does it come from?

At my bee , the propolis we use is not mass-produced . It is collected exclusively from our apiaries around Lake Plastira — one of the purest areas in Greece, with rich biodiversity and a protected ecosystem.
